Prince Yusupov, as Catherine II's envoy to Italy, arranged for Pietro Gonzaga to be chief stage designer in Russia. Pietro Gonzaga had expertice in creating stage sets, especially using trompe l'oeil. Consider, linear perspective was unknown in Russia until the 20th century, thus Pietro Gonzaga's stage sets must have appeared magical in Russia.
